Mother-to-mother support has proven to be one of the most successful approaches to encourage mothers to breastfeed their babies. The WI Peer Counselor Program hires and trains mothers who have successfully breastfed to encourage other women to breastfeed. The concept at the heart of the Peer Counselor Program is that, as peers, these mothers have an ability to help and influence other mothers that health professionals do not have.

Peer counselors offer information, encouragement, and breastfeeding help to WIC mothers, via telephone calls, and in the WIC clinic.

 Goals

The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program was initiated to improve infant health through increases in the practice of breastfeeding.

  1. To increase the number of pregnant WIC mothers who choose to breastfeed their infants.
  2. To provide follow-up support for mothers when they have their babies to help them initiate and continue breastfeeding.
  3. To provide a long-term neighborhood based network of breastfeeding support.
